About the area

An enchanting corner of Scotland

There can be few places offering the peace and tranquility of the Machars Peninsula in the heart of Galloway, south west Scotland. Mile upon mile of rolling countryside speckled with a handful of small villages, quaint fishing harbours, ancient woodlands, prehistoric standing stones, medieval history and stunning coastline all offering a unique, truly magical place to explore, enjoy and experience.

Drumfad is located just over 2 miles from the picturesque harbour village of Port William within easy reach of unspoilt sandy beaches, the cafés and bookshops of Wigtown, Scotland’s National Book ‘Town’ with its population of little over 950 and the nearby Galloway Forest Park with its world-renowned mountain biking and walking trails. There’s also the medieval town of Whithorn where St Ninian first brought Christianity to Scotland in the 8th century and the harbour village of Garlieston where the floating harbours used in the D-Day landings were tested in secret during the final stages of WWII.

At Monreith, a few miles south of Port William, is a statue of a bronze otter erected in memory of Gavin Maxwell, author of ‘Ring of Bright Water’. Maxwell used to exercise his pet otter on the beach below his family home of Monreith House. Nature lovers will be drawn to the many nature reserves in the area and some unforgettable sunsets can be enjoyed, especially looking out across Luce Bay to Ireland and the Isle of Man in the distance.

If you are seeking seclusion, looking to experience a gentler pace of life from a bygone era, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy seeing the area’s wildlife in a truly beautiful setting, then a holiday at Drumfad is most definitely for you. And children too will love the wide open spaces, sandy beaches and exploring just as much as the grown-ups!
